Vernon Sherrill Hogan, 89, of Brookport, Illinois, passed away at his home on August 2, 2025.
Sherrill was born on April 4, 1936, in New Liberty, Pope County, Illinois, to the late Cecil Hogan and Marie (Powell) Hogan. Sherrill attended Yellowbird School in Hamletsburg, Illinois.
Sherrill married Mary Faughn on September 29, 1956. They moved to Oak Park, Illinois, where he worked at National Can before returning to Brookport, Illinois, to raise their 3 children. The family settled on Strawberry Road, where they purchased some farmland and built their home. He resided there for many years while running his own construction business and later working at Electric Energy Incorporated in Joppa, Illinois. Sherrill was a talented craftsman and could build anything from homes to furniture. Sherrill enjoyed the lighter side of life and was the eternal jokester. The litmus test of how well-liked you were by Sherrill was how much he joked in your presence. Sherrill was a member of Brookport First Baptist Church. Sherrill lived the last years of his life with his son, David, as his caregiver.
Sherrill is survived by his children, David Hogan and Melinda (David) Wessel; 5 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; a brother, Larry (Nancy) Hogan; sisters-in-laws, Judy Hogan (Gail) and Deb Hogan (Ronald), and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary (Faughn) Hogan; a son, Douglas Hogan; his brothers, Gail and Ronald Hogan; his sisters, Velita True Hogan and Wilda Lois (Hogan) Johnston; and a special friend, Frances McCarthy.
Graveside Services will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2025 at 11 am at Pell Cemetery.
