Shirley Gamblin Cummings Obituary

On Sunday, February 4, 2024, in Metropolis, IL, at the age of 93, Shirley Kotter Gamblin Cummings moved on to her home in heaven.

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 10, 2024 at Metropolis Memorial Gardens with Rev. Paul Jacob officiating. There will be no visitation. Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery.

Shirley was born in Metropolis, IL on September 25, 1930; a daughter and 7th child to Ervin and Pearl Kotter. After completing high school, she worked at the Glove Factory where she met her future husband, Lewis Earl “Salty” Gamblin, and they were married on November 3, 1949 at a church in Vienna, IL. After 33 years of marriage, Salty preceded her in death on October 2, 1982 at the young age of 50.

Five years after Salty’s death, Shirley married Leo Cummings on August 14, 1987 at a church in Brienburg, KY. After 19 years of marriage with Leo, he preceded Shirley in death on January 19, 2009.

Aside from the Glove factory, Shirley worked at Nelson Optical in both Brookport, IL and Metropolis, IL. Lastly, she worked at the Kentucky White Oaks Mall, first at the Fashion Bug and then at Dillards until she retired at age 77. Shirley had a love for travel, enjoying 18 motor coach trips with Leo that went to all 50 states and the latest fashions. She loved the Lord Jesus Christ and her family and she will be deeply missed.

Shirley is survived by her two children and their spouses, Steve and Tracy Gamblin and Patti and Mike Faughn, all of Metropolis; two step-daughters, Connie Cummings McGinnis of Metropolis and Nancy Cummings Burnett of San Diego, CA; 4 grandchildren, Megan Gamblin, Chase Gamblin, Tim Faughn and Beth Faughn; 5 great grandchildren, Abby and Aaron Faughn, Ruby Shpayer, Emry Gamblin and Louis Gamblin; sister, Wanda Helm; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; 1st husband Lewis “Salty” Gamblin; 2nd husband, Leo Cummings; and grandson who preceded her on April 30, 1999, Stephen Brice Gamblin.
