Roy H. Wetherington, 85 of Brookport, IL, passed away on Saturday, October 26, 2024 at his home.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 1, 2024 at the Loftus-McManus Brookport Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Lunsford officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Sterling Cumberland Presbyterian Church Cemetery with military rites.
Roy was a carpenter by trade, worked for the Ford Motor Co. and served his country in the United States Army. He was the last member of the Hamletsburg Baptist Church and although there is no longer a building, Roy memorialized the church with a monument where he re-hung the church bell. He was an avid arrowhead hunter and loved spending time with his family; especially his grandchildren. Roy was a man of few words, and lived simply and peacefully with a life of contentment. His grandchildren referred to him as a “local celebrity” as he was always recognized by someone when they went out to eat, especially since he was wearing his trademark bib overalls.
Roy is survived by his sons, David Wetherington and wife Kathy of Metropolis, Michael Wetherington and wife Susan of Carterville, IL, Roger Wetherington and wife Melissa of Mayfield, KY and John Wetherington; five grandchildren, Brandon Wetherington, Blake Wetherington (Jasmine Nguyen), Brady Wetherington (Ellie), Gracie Wetherington (Jordan Cobb), and Faith Wetherington; great granddaughter, Hayden Wetherington; sister, Helen Bradley of Fairfield, IL; brother, Robert Wetherington (Judy) of Brookport; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hollis and Velma (Crosier) Wetherington; wife, Martha Wetherington; one grandson, Cory Wetherington; brothers, Louis Wayne Wetherington, Richard Wetherington, and Raymond Wetherington; sister, Rosalee Wetherington.
Visitation will be held on Thursday evening, October 31, 2024 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Loftus-McManus Brookport Funeral Home.
