Marvin Korte Obituary

At 12:49 PM on Sunday, February 18, 2024, Marvin Edward Korte, 86, of Belknap, IL, was welcomed into his well-earned eternal reward surrounded by his wife, children, and grandchildren at Massac Memorial Hospital in Metropolis, Illinois.

From the day he was born in Massac County on May 23, 1937, Marvin was destined for greatness and never fell short.  From his love for life to his impeccable work ethic (and unfortunately for others, at times, his practical jokes), Marvin never delivered anything halfway.  He was the first to take on any challenge that helped others and never stopped until the job was done well.

Professionally, Marvin left quite the mark at Allied-Honeywell where he spent 45 years as a fluorination operator making UF6.  Still today, many fondly recall the lessons Marvin taught them and problems only he could solve.  This praise is well-earned and backed by Marvin’s impressive status as the most prolific UF6 processor in the world to date.

Marvin was most at home, though, on one of his John Deere tractors (often fitted with his latest self-created customizations).  For Marvin, farming was more than a hobby.  He took great pride in this second career, carefully tending to his land, including that farmed by his father and grandfather before him.  He also used his gifts and passion to serve others as the creator of the beloved Marvin’s Marvelous Maize Maze where he created and maintained a unique annual corn maze that served as a fundraiser for local church youth.

Above all else, though, Marvin was a devoted husband, loving father, and doting grandfather.  His family meant everything to him, and he consistently showed this through the years.  Marvin loved creating opportunities for his family to enjoy one another, from a family park made in the clearing of the woods behind his home to the infamous “Bold and Beautiful” gator trail.  Marvin didn’t just create magnificent things, though.  He also created beautiful relationships with those in his community and a warm home filled with love.

In addition to his savior, Marvin was welcomed into Heaven by his parents, Dewey and Ruth Korte, brother Lester Korte, and sister Doris Krueger.  Carrying on his legacy, are Marvin’s treasured wife of 57 years, Mary, and his children Melissa (Tim) Thomasson, Mark (Tandy) Korte, and Melanie (John) Hamrick.  Also carrying on his legacy, but with a hint of his famous mischief, are his grandchildren Sophia Cykert, Hattie Thomasson, Gracie Hamrick, Nick Korte, Kyle (Alex) Hamrick, Tyler Hamrick, Josh Hamrick, and Adam (Kayla) Hamrick, and great-grandchildren Gatlin, Lilli, Emma, Eli, and Ethan Hamrick.

A private graveside service will be held on Tuesday, February 20, with Pastor Michael Nave officiating.
