Joyce Flynn Obituary

Mrs. Joyce (Black) Flynn, 61 of Belknap, IL, passed away on Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at Baptist Health Paducah.

Her visitation will be held from 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM with a funeral service to follow at 11 am on Saturday, September 8, 2018 at New Hope Baptist Church.  Rev. Frank Forthman will be officiating.  A private burial will be held following the service. 

Mrs. Flynn was born on December 5, 1956 to Theodore and Virginia (Smith) Black. She graduated from Metropolis High School in 1974 and Murray State University, with a degree in Business Education, in 1979.   Joyce worked for Southeastern Illinois College from 1980 to 1985 and for the Illinois Department of Corrections, in Vienna, from 1985 until her retirement in 2011.  In 2003, Joyce married her best friend, Larry Flynn, from Elizabethtown, IL.  Joyce was very involved in her community.  She was a secretary for AFSCME Local 451 for 19 years.   She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church where she was involved in many mission trips to Jamaica and Rock Island.   She also belonged to the Elks Club in Metropolis for the past 10 years.  She was a proud member of the Paducah Women’s Bowling Association where she attended the National Women’s Bowler’s Conference for 27 years.  She was an active member for many years of the New Columbia 4H club.  Joyce served on the Massac County Youth Fair board for over 20 years.  Upon her father’s passing Joyce took over the position of superintendent of the agricultural division for the board.  Joyce and her best friend, Brenda, were co-captains of the New Hope/New Columbia Relay For Life team.  Joyce loved spending time with her family and especially with her husband, Larry.  She could light up any room she entered and will be remembered for her quick wit and wonderful sense of humor. 

Joyce is survived by her husband Larry of New Columbia and one stepson Ryan Flynn of Rosiclaire, her mother Virginia of New Columbia, one brother, Hartzel Black and his wife Loralea of Holly Lake Ranch, Texas, three nieces and nephews, Sheri and Jeff Donahue and their daughter Molly of Marion, IL, Jeri and Scott Miller and their daughter Shelbey of Goreville, IL, and Mark and Trista Black and their son Jax of Highland, IL.   She is also survived by her best friend for over 55 years, Brenda Rushing.

She was preceded in death by her father, Theodore and infant twin brother, Eugene Lavern Black.
