James "Doug" Burton Obituary

James Douglas “Doug” Burton, age 89, of Metropolis, Illinois passed away January 19, 2025 at home.

Doug was born September 20, 1935. He was a lifetime resident of Metropolis and a member of First United Methodist Church where he served on many boards and committees and taught a Sunday School class for 33 years. He also served on the Massac County Unit 1 School Board for 15 years, was a Kentucky Colonel, and a member of Gideons International.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Anita “Jo” Burton; two daughters, Chrystal Parker and husband Kerry of Grand Chain, and Staci Burton and husband Jay Collins of Chicago; two granddaughters, Karly Burk and husband Drayke, and Katie Barfield and husband Jesse; two great grandchildren, Scarlett Burk and James Barfield; one sister, Charlotte Midnight and husband Chip; three nieces and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dan and Charlotte Burton; and sister, Shirley Phillips.

There will be no service. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Project Hope Humane Society, P.O. Box 125, Metropolis, IL, 62960.
