Mr. Jack C. Garner I, age 92, of Metropolis, IL, died at 1:30 am on Sunday, July 8, 2018 at the Metropolis Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born on March 9, 1926 in St. Louis, MO as the fourth child to James and Helen Garner.
Graveside services will be held at 10am on Tuesday, July 10, 2018 at the Metropolis Memorial Gardens with Dr. Joe Buchanan officiating. There will be no visitation. Friends and family are asked to meet at the cemetery.
Mr. Garner worked from an early age. His first job was a golf caddy after school at the age of 8. In the 10th grade, Jack left school and enlisted in the Navy for 4 years. He served on the S.S. Corporal as a Qualified Submariner in charge of the left port propeller speed during World War II. In 1938, one year after returning from the service, Jack married Phyllis Kotter and were married 66 years and 13 days until her death on January 13, 2014. After the war, Mr. Garner was a paint manager at a paint store in Metropolis. His boss encouraged him to obtain his GED, which he passed, and became employed with Allied Chemical for 30 years until his retirement. He enjoyed fishing and remodeling their home. Jack was of the Christian faith and attended First Baptist Church in Metropolis.
Jack is survived by one daughter, Pam Schwartz and husband Jim; his son, Jay Garner and wife Jan; one son-in-law, Donald Laird; five grandchildren, Angie Ball, Molly Lyon, Pam Kreuter, Donnie Laird II, and Cory Garner; eight great grandchildren; one sister, Jane Whitright; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Helen Garner; wife of 66 years, Phyllis (Kotter) Garner; one daughter, Patricia (Garner) Laird; one sister, Elizabeth Sackler; two brothers, Jim Garner and Bud Garner.
Memorial contributions may be given in Jack’s name to Lourdes Hospice PO Box 7100 Paducah, KY 42002.
Arrangements are entrusted to Miller-Loftus-McManus Funeral Home in Metropolis.
