Gary “Rube” Gentry, 67 of Metropolis, passed away on Saturday, July 10, 2021 at his residence surrounded by his family.
A celebration of life service will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 15, 2021 at the Loftus-McManus Brookport Funeral Home with Bro. Kelly Glass officiating.
Gary was a carpenter from 1978 to 2006 and was passionate about building and developing, including the subdivision Cedar Lane he developed in Metropolis. Throughout his working career, he also sold insurance, drove a Hostess truck, and worked at Pat Parker’s Machine Shop. In the mid-90’s, Gary bought a building on 10th Street, refurbished it, and opened a diner called Rube’s. He was baptized on May 20, 1962, and most recently attended First Baptist Church in Metropolis. Gary married his junior high school sweetheart, Sue Smallman, on July 22, 1972.
Gary is survived by his wife of almost 49 years, Sue Gentry; two sons, Jason Scott Gentry (Amy) and Barry Lee Gentry; two granddaughters, Chloë Anne-Alis Legereit and Jaime Lynn Lily Gentry; two brothers, Bob Gentry (Jane Ann) and John Gentry (Lesli); one sister, Bette Lange (Jerry); and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Annie Gladys (Brown) Gentry and his mother-in-law, Devona Smallman.
A visitation with the family will be held on Thursday, July 15th from 4:00 p.m. until the service at 6:00 p.m. at the Loftus-McManus Brookport Funeral Home.
