Mrs. Wilma L. Lassiter, age 83 of Princeton, IL formerly of Metropolis, IL passed away at 4:15 am on Friday, June 7, 2013 at Liberty Village in Princeton.Funeral services will be held at 1 pm on Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at the Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home in Metropolis. Rev. Jeff Bealmear will officiate. Burial will follow in the Metropolis Memorial Gardens.Wilma was born on February 11, 1930 to the late Bertha Oakes Wells and Emil Dummeier.Mrs. Lassiter's career was in education. She received her bachelor's degree in 1952 and her master's degree in 1967, both from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.She taught for 35 years at Metropolis Community High School and Massac County High School. For many years at Metropolis High, she directed the speech and drama activities and supervised student teachers for Southern Illinois University. After retiring from high school teaching in 1988, she became an adjunct instructor for Shawnee Community College for 11 years.She was a member of the Illinois Retired Teachers' Association, the Massac County Retired Teachers' Association, and the First United Methodist Church in Metropolis.Surviving are her husband of 60 years, Jesse C. Lassiter, Jr., one son, Jay C. Lassiter and wife Kim of Upland, CA, one daughter Jayne C. DeCoste and husband Dave of Hiawatha, Iowa, and four grandchildren, Joshua Conway Lassiter and Zachary Burgess Lassiter of Upland, and Nicole Jessica DeCoste and Justin Nicholas DeCoste of Hiawatha.She was preceded in death by her parents, Bertha Oakes Wells and Emil Dummeier.Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 12, 2013 from 10 am until 1 pm at the Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home in Metropolis.
