Obituary

Verna Marie Comer, age 95, of Metropolis, Illinois passed peacefully from this life at 5:45 am on December 6, 2024 at Southgate Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Metropolis.

Marie was born to Raymond and Nona Bell Oliver on June 11, 1929.

One day in 1943, at the age of 14, Marie accompanied her dad to work at his logging job, owned and operated by Lee Comer. Lee's son Barney, age 15, just happened to be there with "his" dad working that day and when Barney laid eyes on Marie – that was the day the magic began and they became inseparable – married a year later and remained inseparable until Barneys passing in 1980.

In 1949 – Barney opened the Comer Harley Davison shop on lower Ferry Street and Marie worked along side him in the shop until Barney was hired at Allied in 1959. Marie was born to be a wife, mom, and homemaker and literally lived for her family.

Marie was widowed at the early age of 51 when Barney passed away from a heart attack and she threw herself into gardening, canning, and doing for Billy, Katy, and her grandkids.

She was a perfectionist about her home and best known for the best pickled pigs feet, relishes, homemade jams, cakes, and pies a person could find anywhere.

Marie was a member of Seven Mile Baptist Church, but for the 15 years before her health began to fail in 2004, she attended Weaver Creek Baptist Church with Katy and was a constant figure there until she could no longer get out and about.

Besides her husband, Barney, Marie was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Nona Bell Oliver; sister, Jimmy Nell; brothers, Albert and Reuben.

Surviving are her son, Bill (Kay); granddaughter, Kim (Evan); grandsons, Kevin and Brian (Pam); great grandsons, Benjamin and Bradley; and several great great grandchildren.

A private family service was held. Arrangements have been entrusted to Aikins-Farmer-Loftus-McManus Funeral Home. Online condolences may be made at www.aikinsfarmer-millerfh.com
