Verna “Dee” Costos, age 89 of Metropolis, Illinois passed away July 30, 2026 at Baptist Health Hospital in Paducah, Kentucky.
Funeral services will be held at 12 noon on Tuesday, August 4, 2026 at the Aikins-Farmer-Loftus-McManus Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the Metropolis Memorial Gardens.
Verna was of Baptist faith and was a member of the Heartland Baptist Church. She was an active member in the Sisters & Stitches club. She enjoyed crafting, especially sewing and crocheting, she loved playing Bingo down at Happy Hearts, and enjoyed gardening and getting to watch her beautiful flowers grow. Verna travelled often with her gals from church and got to visit Jerusalem. Her favorite place to travel though was down to Florida, where she could relax on a sandy beach. She will be dearly missed.
Verna Dee is survived by her daughters, Terri Heflin, Pamela (Murphy) Henson and husband Johnny; son, Robert Murphy and wife Angela; grandchildren, Tonya House, Jamie Parker, Alan Sullivan, Chris Murphy, Bryan Murphy and Samuel Murphy; 13 great grandchildren; several great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; beloved dog, Coco.
Verna was preceded in death by her parents, Slyvester and Violet (Davis) Bowman; great-great-granddaughter , Amelia “Millie” House; sisters, Mildred Hill, June Ramey, Kay Wright; brothers, Charles “Corky” Bowman, Ronnie Bowman, and James Bowman.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 4, 2026 from 11 a.m. to 12 noon at Aikins-Farmer-Loftus-McManus Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made in Verna’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
Pallbearers will be Chris Murphy, Alan Sullivan, Samuel Murphy, Matt Parker, Garrion House, and Nash House.
