Obituary

Reverend Eugene Stanley "Stan" Gerard, age 82, of Metropolis, IL formerly of Paducah, KY died at 6 am on Sunday, April 26, 2015 at Southgate Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.Funeral services for Reverend Eugene Stanley "Stan" Gerard will be held Wednesday, April 29th at 10 am at Miller Funeral Home in Metropolis with burial to follow at Campground Church Cemetery. Reverend Dwight Kaylor will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 pm Tuesday April 28th at Miller Funeral Home. The family appreciates shared memories and loving fellowship. However in lieu of flowers please consider a donation of time or money to Dementia research or causes that help children or the elderly. Stan was born August 18th, 1932 in Detroit Michigan to Eugene B and Viola Gerard. During the time of the Korean War he joined the U.S. Air Force, serving in the Pacific as a control tower operator on Guam and Johnston Island.After his discharge he attended Murray State University on the G.I. bill. It was there that he met and married Vanda Oliver in 1957. After graduation he taught sciences at Joppa High School for 10 years before being hired at Shawnee Community College. He taught biology at SCC for 20 years.In 1980 he was ordained a minister in the Cumberland Presbyterian church. During his time as a pastor "Brother Stan" ministered at Campground C.P. Church in Union county, Mt Sterling C.P. Church in Massac county, Sugar Grove C.P. Church in Crittenden county, KY and Trinity Presbyterian Church in Metropolis.Stan is survived by his wife Vanda Oliver Gerard, two sons Anthony S. of Vienna, IL and Darren V. of Tempe, AZ, his sister Barbara Gerard Brierly of Bloomfiled Hills, MI, four grandchildren Amber, Philippe, Aldi and Vodra and thousands of former students.
