Mr. Ralph Sommer, age 86, of Grand Chain, IL, passed away at 3:00 a.m. on Monday, April 27, 2015 at the Metropolis Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 30, 2015 at the Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home with Revs. David Wright, Jerry Brown, and Ben Hottel officiating. Burial will follow in the Anderson Church Cemetery in Boaz, IL with military rites.Ralph Sommer married Janette Brooks on August 11, 1950, and from this union they had two sons, Philip Ralph and Kent Allen. Mr. Sommer was a faithful member of the Hillerman Baptist Church. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and always enjoyed spending his time with his family and friends. Ralph was retired from Electric Energy, Inc., was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers and loved to hunt and fish. He was an Army Veteran serving in the Korean War.Ralph is survived by his two sons, Philip Sommer and wife Sandy and Kent Sommer and wife Andrea all of Grand Chain, IL; 2 brothers, William "Bill" Sommer and Amos Sommer both of Metropolis; 1 sister, Pauline Warren of Fulton, KY; three grandchildren, Joshua Sommer of Paducah, KY, Kyle Sommer and wife Andrea of Metropolis, and Lindsay Hertter and husband George of Metropolis; 1 step granddaughter, Stephanie Machan and husband Rocky of Paducah, KY; and six great-grandchildren, Isaac, Hannah, Kaylene and Johnathan Sommer, Trevor Hertter and Caden Sommer.He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Janette; his parents, Sherman and Rosa (Thompson) Sommer; 2 brothers, Odress and Russell Sommer; 2 sisters, Waiva Burnett and Lorraine Burnett.Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until the funeral hour at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 30th at the Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home in Metropolis.
