Paul W. Karber, age 93 of New Columbia, IL, formerly of Carbondale, IL passed away on Thursday, September 3, 2026.
Paul was born in Harrisburg, Illinois on December 19, 1932 the son of Ezra and Elizabeth Karber. He spent his earlier years in Karbers Ridge then his family moved to Metropolis where he graduated high school. In his early adulthood he moved to Carbondale to attend Southern Illinois University where he became a member of the Iota Lambda Sigma Fraternity for maintaining a 4.0 GPA in the Industrial Education program. He later graduated with a Master’s Degree in Industrial Education and established a career as a Vocational Director at Carbondale High School where he worked until his retirement.
Paul was a member of the First Methodist Church, and a former member of the First Christian Church in Carbondale. He participated and was a member of the Carbondale Lions Club and enjoyed gardening, woodworking and working around the farm on his tractors.
Paul is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Diane (Nutty) Karber; son, Richard Lee Karber (Bethany), grandchildren, Alex Paul Karber and Erin Grace Karber; niece, Nancy Jones; and nephew, Dr. Stephen Miller.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth Karber; father and stepmother, Ezra and Ruby Karber; sister, Dorothy Miller; brother, Bertis Karber; sister-in-law, Betty Karber.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 am until 11:00 am on Wednesday, September 9th at the First Methodist Church in Metropolis with Pastor Joey Dunning officiating. Funeral service will be at 11am with burial following at the Metropolis Memorial Gardens.
Memorial contributions may be given in Paul’s name to COPE, PO Box 761, Metropolis, IL 62960 or First Methodist Church 100 E. 5th Street, Metropolis, IL 62960. Or of any local charities of your choosing.
Pallbearers will be Roger Stafford, Chris Ochsenbein, David Glass, Tommy Reed, Larry Swope, and Mark Souders.
Honorary pallbearer will be Alex Paul Karber.
