IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Paul
Horman
February 23, 1929 – November 22, 2024
Paul Horman of Metropolis passed away Friday, November 22, 2024 at Southgate Nursing Home in Metropolis. Paul was born February 23, 1929, to his parents, Benjamin and Sophia (Foss) Horman.
On June 5th, 1955, he married Alfredia Rottmann of Metropolis. The couple was married 66 years. Three sons were born to this union, all of whom live within two miles of the family home.
After graduating high school, Paul served in the military in Washington state for two years during the Korean conflict. He was active in the Massac Republican party for several years and served as precinct committeeman.
Paul and Alfredia served as volunteer emergency foster parents for several years and remained in contact with their foster children until the time of her death in 2022.
In the late 1950's, Paul worked construction out of Operators 318 for which he was a member for 45 years. During this time, in 1956, he built a home in Massac County on the family farm. The home still stands today and is lived in by one of his grandsons and his family. It was also during this time that Paul ventured into the Pump and Well Service/Well drilling business with Paul Wittig. The company still runs today and is owned by Paul's oldest son, Greg. Though he had other occupations, his favorite, lifelong vocation was that of farmer which he enjoyed until he went into the nursing home in 2022.
Paul served on the Massac County Unit One school board for over 20 years, beginning at Jefferson school, and took considerable pride in his time on the Illinois School Board Association at the state level.
Paul was a lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church in Metropolis and served the congregation faithfully as a church council member, choir member, Men's Bible study member, and joyful participant in the annual ice cream social. He was particularly proud of the fact that he was involved in laying and facing stone on the current church building.
Paul is survived by his sons, Greg (Carol) Horman, Mike Horman, and Bruce (Lanna) Horman; one sister, Lois Anderson; ten grandchildren, Ben (Leslie) Horman, Zach (Julieann) Horman, Jake (Jacki) Horman, Stephen Horman, Matthew Horman, Jamie Horman, Austin Horman, Nate Horman, Cami Horman, and Callan Horman; eight great grandchildren, Eleanor, Emi, Emma, Elizabeth, Hailey, Augustus, Braxton, and Huxley; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Sophia Horman; wife of 66 years, Alfredia Horman; his brother, Elmer (Ann) Horman of Ohio, and brother-in-law, Allan Anderson of Streator, IL.
Services for Paul will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 26th, with visitation from 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church. Vicar Aaron Dawson will officiate. Burial to follow in the church cemetery with military rites.
