Mrs. Noraine "Betty" Meng, of Metropolis, Illinois, formerly of Inyokern, CA, passed away on May 22, 2015 at the Metropolis Rehab and Health Care Center at the age of 92.Mrs. Meng was preceded in death by her husband, Roger A. Meng; her parents, Lewis Delos and Lucille Lundstrom Jones; twin sister, Loraine "Peggy" Jones; twin sisters, Jean Grotwald and Joani Ward; brother, Lewis "Bud" Jones.She is survived by one son, David Meng and wife Jill; two granddaughters, Jennifer (Jeremy) Muniz and Lori (Matt) Oliver; four grandchildren, Averi and Zachary Muniz and Elijah and Cooper Oliver; several nieces and nephews.A private family service was held.Noraine Meng was born on August 2, 1922 and spent her formative years in California. Having lived through the poverty of the great depression, she always encouraged young people to pursue their dreams, first, though education. It was that knowledge that education was so vital that led her to attend community colleges and secretarial school resulting in Noraine serving in several clerical positions.Noraine and Roger A. Meng were married while he served his country during World War II and they lived on any bases during his years of service to the country.Among her many passions was her love of reading. Together, we her husband, Roger, she collaborated on several articles for Touring Bike, a magazine for cyclists. Noraine and Roger rode Goldwing Motorcycles and loved traveling. Following retirement, with their camper in tow, they traveled to all 50 states.Mrs. Meng believed in living life to the fullest extent possible and did not let age deter her interests. She traveled to all but 11 states on the back of a motorcycle; in her 70's she began painting; at age 79 she went up in a hot air balloon and at age 80 flew in a glider.In 2002, following her husband's passing, Noraine moved from California, first to Paducah and then to Metropolis to be near her son, David and his family.Noraine continued to be active and believed strongly in volunteerism through her life. She was an active volunteer for the Audubon Society; Museum Maturango in Ridgecrest, CA and was a member of the PAPA Gallery of Paducah for several years.She believed that education, then marriage, and parenting were vital to enrich one's life.Noraine "Betty" Meng leaves behind a legacy of adventure, service and determination.Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home in Metropolis were in charge of arrangements.Online condolences may be left at www.aikinsfarmer-millerfh.com.
