Nellie Mae McCormick Holt, age 89, passed away Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at Massac Memorial Hospital with her loving family by her side after a short illness.
Funeral services will be held at 1pm on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at the Aikins-Farmer-Loftus-McManus Funeral Home with Jim Faughn officiating. Burial will follow in Metropolis Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Holt was born on July 21, 1928, the youngest child of Lee and Nellie Ethel Johnston. Nellie married John McCormick on May 7, 1945 and they were blessed with four daughters. John liked to travel and they moved around the U.S. living in Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Indiana, Michigan and finally settled in Metropolis in 1962 where they made their home and raised their family.
Nellie was a homemaker and worked as a waitress at the 45 Café for 15 years. It was always said she was one of the best waitress' ever. After leaving her job as a waitress to care for her husband, Nellie took her love of children and babysat out of her home for friends and family. Those children still lovingly refer to her as Mamaw. Nellie loved playing cards and board games with her family. Not only did she enjoy them but she was great at them, rarely losing anything she played. She was a member of the Highway 45 Church of Christ and drove herself to services as long as her health allowed.
Nellie is survived by three daughters, Carrol Horstman (Lindell), Annette Shepherd, Betty Diles-Fitchett (David); Eural Claxton (Clara), who she raised like a son; one stepson, Jimmie Holt (Hom); 10 grandchildren, Andrew Horstman (Teri), Aaron Horstman (Amanda) and Amy Horstman, Steven Shepherd, Kim Watson (Chad), Christopher Diles (Chelsi), Amber Loverkamp (Marvin), George Hertter (Lindsay), Kevin Hertter, and Julie Petrillo (Brett); a step grandson who had a special place in her heart, Jason Holt; 12 great grandchildren, Emilie Horstman, Braxton, Benton, and Beckham Watson, Brayden and Adalyn Diles, Kirk and Skylar Loverkamp, Trevor Hertter, Ashlyn, Easton, and Brelyn Petrillo; three step great grandchildren, Mason Kerley, Kadon Hill and Waylon Hill; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, John McCormick; second husband, James Holt; one daughter, Regena Hertter; one grandson, John Wilder; son-in-law, Rick Diles; five sisters, Elva Leora Johnston, Clara Belle Johnston, Reba McCarver, Flora Sullivan, Lillian Risinger; five brothers, Buddy Johnston, Arnold Johnston, Paul Johnston, Albert Johnston and James Johnston; one stepson; one stepdaughter; several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 11am until the funeral hour at 1pm on Saturday, February 17th, at the Aikins-Farmer-Loftus-McManus Funeral Home in Metropolis.
