(Wilson) Sommer
June 3, 1922 – February 28, 2024
Mary Catherine Wilson Sommer, of Metropolis, Illinois passed away on Wednesday, February 28, 2024 at 2:07 pm at Baptist Health Hospital in Paducah, KY. Born on June 3, 1922, to Hugh Benjamin Wilson and Zelphia Wallace Wilson in Unionville, IL. On May 13, 1945, she married John Henry Sommer of Shoate, IL. To this union was born one daughter, Catherine Sue Sommer Parker. At the age of 12 she was baptized into Christ in the Ohio River at Brookport, IL and was a faithful member of the Metropolis Church of Christ in Metropolis, IL.
Funeral services will be held at 2 pm on Monday, March 4, 2024 at the Aikins-Farmer-Loftus-McManus Funeral Home with Steve Karraker officiating. Burial will follow in the Pell Cemetery.
Mary worked for thirty years at Good Luck Glove Factory in Metropolis, IL, until its closing and then at Normandy Frocks (dress factory) in Paducah, KY, until her retirement. She was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed sewing in her spare time for her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a half-brother, Ellis Rixie of California, and a brother, Charlie Wilson of Unionville, IL, and her son-in-law, Patrick Parker of Metropolis, IL.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Sue Parker of Metropolis, IL; three grandchildren, Melanie Parker Linder and spouse Timothy Linder of Orange Beach, AL, Mendi Parker Jones and spouse Britt Jones of Pueblo, CO, and Matthew Parker and spouse Jamie Henson Parker of Metropolis, IL; nine great grandchildren, Jordan Wilson (Lynn) of Reagan, TN; Hunter Johnson (Shelby) of Mount Pleasant, TN; Luke Higdon of Louisville, KY; Brittany Markus (Ben), Matthew Parker, Jr., and Alyssa Parker all of Metropolis, IL; Chris Neudecker (Rachael) of Spring Hill, TN; Kyle Jones of Pueblo, CO; and Tori Jones of Atlanta, GA; and fourteen great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Monday, March 4, 2024 from 1 pm to 2 pm at the Aikins-Farmer-Loftus-McManus Funeral Home in Metropolis.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Metropolis Church of Christ, P.O. Box 28, Metropolis, Illinois 62960 in her memory.
Pallbearers will be Matt Parker, Matthew Parker Jr., Hunter Johnson, Luke Higdon, Ben Markus, and Lynn Wilson.
