Mrs. Mary "Polly" Buchanan, age 88, of Metropolis, IL, passed away Friday, February 26, 2016 at Baptist Health Paducah. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 28, 2016, at the Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home in Metropolis, IL, with Dr. Jason Browning officiating. Burial will follow in the Metropolis Memorial Gardens.Polly was born April 13, 1927 in Paducah, Kentucky to J.T. and Bertha Purcell Francis and became a graduate of Paducah Tilghman-Augustus High School in 1945. Upon graduation, she moved to Waco, Texas, where she attended Baylor University and worked as a fashion model for Neiman-Marcus and Sears. She moved back to Paducah, and in 1957 made her home in Massac County, Illinois, with her husband, J.B. Buchanan. Devoted wife, and mother of three, she was a born leader who sacrificed all her time to others, especially her family and her church. She shared her faith in service as a children/youth Sunday school teacher and led numerous children to Christ. She was WMU Director of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in New Liberty, IL. She also served as youth director and Sunday school director of the church. She conducted a Friday night Bible study, and volunteered countless hours to renovating and remodeling the sanctuary of the church. Upon her death, she was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Paducah, Kentucky.Polly served as PTA President of Unity Elementary School and Metropolis Community High School, as well as Booster Club President of Metropolis Community High School. She was especially gifted in areas of drama and creativity, and never at a loss for words or fun. Polly was an avid golfer and charter member of the Ladies Golf Association of the Metropolis Country Club, serving as its President for 7 years. Polly is survived by her husband of 59 years, J. B. Buchanan; two sons, Kerry Lynn and wife Melinda and Kent Buchanan and wife Tracey; one daughter, Tonya Buchanan Smith and husband Mike; five grandsons, Ben Buchanan and wife Amy, Brent Buchanan and wife Keighlee, Ryan Smith and wife Lakin, Will Smith, and Jay Smith; one granddaughter, Samantha Polly Smith Burgess and husband Stephen; three great granddaughters, Lyla McCaslin Buchanan, Evah Grace Smith, and Eliza Clare Smith; two great grandsons, George Benjamin Buchanan and Roman Adam Smith; and her very special niece, Janis Crabtree.She was preceded in death by her parents; beloved mother-in-law, Anna Buchanan; brother-in-law, George "Bus" Buchanan.Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until the funeral hour at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 28 at the Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home in Metropolis.Memorials may be given to the Friendship Baptist Church earmarked for the "So Others May Believe" Fund 146 S.
