Obituary

Margaret Ellen Pogue was born on October 23, 1932 in Massac County and departed this life on July 12, 2024, at age 91 years, peacefully in her home surrounded by her loved ones.

Margaret had many childhood memories that she shared throughout her life with each generation. Some were told more frequently than others, but some of the most vivid for her were caring for her younger siblings, Lindell and Donna Kay, especially how she had to pull Lindell in his wagon after her school day. She also spoke of the great flood of 1937. She fondly recalled her daddy taking her in a rowboat back to their home to retrieve her beloved chalk popeye doll. Margaret was also an ace at playing jacks as a child. She later taught this art to her daughter and granddaughter.

Margaret obtained her first job working at the Massac Theater as an usher for 25 cents and a bag of popcorn. She later worked as a meat wrapper at the Kroger store in Metropolis, where she met her beloved husband, Dan. Margaret also worked as a meat wrapper at Liberty Grocery and Biggs Market in Paducah, KY until her 'so-called' retirement.

Margaret was an avid gardener of fruits, vegetables, and flowers. Her grandchildren were often found gathered at "Grandma's" during their younger years. She loved her time with them and created many found memories ranging from joining in their outside play during the day to making 'pallets' on the living room floor at night. While these adventures were often without incident, those involved still remember the aftermath that occurred when a scratch was made in her new bathtub by a tin cup that she had given them to play with.

Margaret was a great cook and could make a delicious meal from a little amount of 'what was in the fridge'. Good home-cooked food was always available in her home. She was taught by her mother-in-law, Era, how to make buttermilk biscuits from scratch on one of the frequent visits to family in Mississippi. These biscuits later became a family staple of the Pogue household and were available for every breakfast meal. Family and friends knew, on any given day, you could stop by and enjoy one. She was also known for her flaky pie crust. She spoiled us by making a wide range of them; from gooseberry to cherry cream. We will miss them!

After retirement, Margaret and Dan, along with granddaughter, Carroll, traveled and attended many auctions and Aladdin lamp conventions throughout the country. As a couple, Margaret and Dan spent many evening playing cards with family in a friendly, yet competitive, manner.

Margaret was a collector of many things, but most dear to her heart were memories. A collection she was robbed of later in life.  Her family now take comfort knowing she has now been given those precious memories back as she joins her parents, siblings, son and husband on the other side of the rainbow. Those left will miss her beyond words. Her legacy is not something left for us, but something left in us.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, Odis and Ruby (Laird) Kommer; her siblings, Virgie, Frankie, Lindell, and Donna Kay; husband, Thomas "Dan" Pogue; her son and daughter-in-law, Kevin (Marilyn) Hausman; sons-in-law, B.J. Stokes and Stanley Friese; step-daughter, Leslie Pogue.

She leaves behind her daughters, Paulette Stokes, Karen Friese, and Sara (Mike) Kimmel; grandchildren, Charles Allen, David, Bobby, Doris, Jennifer, Erica, Donna, Carroll, JoNell, and Deric; stepsons, Mark (Jan) Pogue, Scott (Tammy) Pogue; step-grandchildren, Briana, Autumn, Danielle, Audrey, Elizabeth, and Kristina; and multiple great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Judy Kommer; several nieces and nephews; cousins, Freddie and Connie; and her very special neighbors, Danny and Debbie Hillebrand. (This list of survivors establishes the existence of 5 living generations; something she was proud of.)

Friends and family will meet and follow Margaret's requested burial plan at 1:00 p.m. Pallbearers will be David Hausman, Carroll Smith, Deric Hausman, Eyan Isoline, Isaiah Cougill, and Danny Hillebrand.
