Lowell was born on January 1, 1939 in Johnson County, Illinois, the son of Charles and Delsie (Frazier) Helm. On June 3, 1962, he was united in marriage to Rosemary Burnett at the Benton Community Church where he was a member and their song leader. Together they shared 54 years of marriage before her passing on August 10, 2016.

Lowell entered the United States Army in 1962 and spent 4 ½ months close to the front line in the Korean War. He was discharged in 1964 on medical leave due to the fatal illness of his mother. He worked and retired from the City of Vienna and rode his bicycle on the bike trail from Vienna to Tunnel Hill and back almost every day during his hour lunch break. He actively rode his bike until he was 82.

He loved working on his farm and raising cattle. He loved to mow and attend any and every of his grandchildren's games and activities. You could often find him at Hardee's or McDonald's in the morning enjoying a cup of coffee and conversation or driving around to make visits with friends and acquaintances. He never met a stranger and is going to be sorely missed by all who knew him.

Lowell is survived by his daughters, Debra Gray and husband Jason and Sara Goddard and husband Sam; grandchildren, Tanner Reed, Lakin Reed, Allie Reed, Chase Helm, Alexis Goddard, and Jessica Goddard; step grandchildren, Taylor Horn (Jacob) and Blake Gray; siblings, Clifford (Wanda) Helm, Anna Pearl Finke, Vera McGinnis, David Helm, and Robert Wayne (Kay) Helm; sister-in-law, Linda (Larry) Sloan; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many dear friends.
