Obituary

Lois Foss, of rural Massac County, received her eternal reward on July 10, 2026 at the age of 94.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, July 15, 2026 at the Aikins-Farmer-Loftus-McManus Funeral Home with Pastor Keith Tilford officiating. Burial will follow in Zion Evangelical Church Cemetery.

She was born in the Samoth Community to William and Kate Travis on December 3, 1931. She attended New Columbia School and graduated from Massac County High School. She was baptized at New Hope Baptist Church and attended First Christian Church in Metropolis. She was a faithful follower of God her entire life.

She married the love of her life, Henry Foss Jr. on March 14, 1953. She has mourned since his passing in December 2011. Together they farmed their land and raised their daughters. Lois was the homemaker, mother, #1 hired hand and bookkeeper and Henry was the boss. She was excellent in performing all those tasks and giving the girls chores to do to keep them busy. By the time the grandchildren came along, the tractors had cabs and air conditioning. There was always room for the kids to ride all day long with their blankets, pillows and plenty of snacks.

Lois and Henry were totally devoted to each other for 58 years and spent very few nights apart. When she was in the hospital for so long after her accident, he spent every night with her. When his health was failing, she spent every night with him even though she was encouraged to go home and rest.

Until recently, she remained as active as possible at her home, church and community. She drove herself to town weekly to do her shopping. Everyone at the Dollar General and grocery store knew her and were glad to help her reach items on the higher shelves or life heavier items into her cart, such as her R.C. Colas.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Kenneth, Bob, Don and Howard Travis; Henry’s siblings, Carl, Mildred, Geneva and Gladys; and great-great granddaughter, Reagan Jo Bremer.

Mourning her passing are her daughters, Nancy (Bill) Gower and Kay (Terry) Manley; grandchildren, Terri Jo (Tim) Reynolds, Andrew (Racheal) Gower, Amanda (Mike) Joiner, and Brent (Sarah) Manley; great grandchildren, Courtney (Jason) Bremer, Jordan (Erica) Reynolds, Haydn Gower, Taylor and Kennady Joiner, Addalee and Henry Manley, and Sloane and Aspen Gower; great-great grandchildren, Reed and Leighton Bremer; sister-in-law, Betty Travis; many nieces and nephews; and her special “sister-friend”, June Sielbeck.

Lois will be deeply missed by all. God certainly received this good and faithful servant with open arms.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm on Wednesday, July 15th at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be given in Lois’ name to First Christian Church, 420 Catherine Street, Metropolis, IL 62960 or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Condolences may be left online at www.aikinsfarmer-millerfh.com.

Pallbearers will be David Travis, Bobby Travis, Gary Sommer, Patrick Mescher, Dwight Travis, and Chuck Travis.
