Lela B. (nee Walker) Volle, 95, of Metropolis, passed away Sunday, Nov. 29, 2015 at Massac Memorial Hospital in Metropolis. Lela was born Oct. 28, 1920, in Pope County, IL to the late Alonzo Walker and Aretta (nee Christy) Walker. She was preceded in death by her parents and six of her seven siblings; Nell (Herbert) Niles of Muncie, IN, Stella (Henry) Atwood of Peoria, Alma (Gene) Hoffstetter of Sullivan, MO, Alta (Everett) Chamberlain of Golconda, Lora (Melvin) Shelby of Golconda, and Alonzo (Marie) Walker of Golconda. Her youngest sibling, Dorothy (Milton) Baker of Swansea, IL, survives.Lela was born on her parents' farm in rural Pope County but moved to Golconda at the age of 14 when her father was elected Pope County Sherriff. She resided with her parents at the Pope County Jail Residence, attended Pope County schools, and was united in marriage to L.B. Brandt on June 13, 1943, in Charleston, MO. L.B. was serving the US Army at the time of their marriage and was deployed to serve overseas on August 5th, 1944. On her 24th birthday, October 28th, 1944, Lela received a telegram informing her that L.B. had been killed in action in France on September 11th, 1944.Lela later married Merrill Volle, also of Pope County. Merrill served as postmaster of the Golconda Post Office briefly but the couple soon moved to Aurora to seek better employment opportunities. Lela worked for Vendo in Aurora, Illinois where she assisted in manufacturing vending machines. They remained in Aurora until they retired in 1976 and purchased a home in Metropolis. They both thoroughly enjoyed their retirement years being close to family and old friends and making many new friends through their church and the Happy Hearts organization. Merrill preceded her in death on February 7th, 1986.Following Merrill's death Lela turned to her church, First United Methodist of Metropolis, for support and companionship. Through her church, and her neighbor, Lela met Wesley May with whom she shared many interests, especially her faith and love of Gospel singing. Lela and Wes became frequent companions and enjoyed dining out, trips to the store, traveling to Gospel singings, and each other's companionship. Lela became close to many of Wes' family members and was often included in their family events and celebrations. Wes' family extended innumerable kindnesses to Lela and always looked out for her as if she were family.Lela also had a special relationship with her surviving sister, Dorothy Baker of Swansea, IL and her family. Lela and Dorothy were the only siblings living at home when they moved to Golconda and became constant companions. Lela and Dorothy formed a bond in those years that carried on throughout Lela's life. Lela and Merrill were not blessed with children and so developed a special bond with Dorothy and Milton's son, Jeffrey, and rarely missed spending a Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving or Jeffrey's birthday with Dorothy, Milton and Jeffrey. In addition to Dorothy and Wesley May and his family, she is survived by many loving nieces, nephews, great- and great-great-nieces and nephews.Memorials may be made to Waltersburg Cemetery Association in care of the funeral home.
