Obituary

Johnny G. Fletcher, 90, died Sunday, October 30, 2016 at the Colonnade Senior Living Community in O'Fallon, IL. He was born in Saline County IL, at his grandmother's home, the son of Ruth (Serie) Fletcher and John Tucker Fletcher. After graduation, he joined the US Navy serving in the South Pacific during WWII after which he was employed by Peabody Coal Company for 8 years. John married Joann in 1947 and they began their life together in Galatia, IL. In 1955, they moved to Metropolis where John worked as an electrician at Electric Energy Inc. and after 35 years he retired in 1989. John began his second career in real estate working for several real estate agencies in Metropolis and retired from Farmer and Co. Real Estate in 2012. As a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church for 60 years, John served as President of the Methodist Men, Sunday school superintendent and many other church related activities. He most notably helped establish Wesley Chapel, a satellite mission for the First United Methodist Church and served there for 15 years. John leaves his wife of 68 years, Joann (Lawrence) Fletcher, son John D. Fletcher of St. Louis, MO, two granddaughters; Elizabeth Thomas of Gainesville FL, and Amy (Thomas) Arcos of Durham, NC, as well as one great grandson, Thomas Gustavo Arcos, and one son-in-law, Dave Thomas of Naples, FL. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Barbara (Fletcher) Thomas; sister, Mary Lou Adams; and brother, Bill Fletcher. Visitation will start at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 4, 2016 at the First United Methodist Church in Metropolis with funeral service to follow at 12:00 noon. Rev. Jon Cockrel, Rev. Shalom Renner, Rev. Jack Adams and Thomas Mittendorf will officiate. Burial will follow in the Metropolis Memorial Gardens. Music will be provided by Stecia Gregory and Pris Abell. Miller Funeral Home in Metropolis is in charge of the arrangements. Online condolences may be left at www.aikinsfarmer-millerfh.com.
