John H. Steele, age 74 of Metropolis, Illinois passed away at 3:31 pm on Sunday, June 7, 2015 at the Ray and Kay Eckstein Hospice Care Center in Paducah, Kentucky.Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Friday, June 12, 2015 at the First Church of God in Metropolis. Rev. Dustin Boos and Rev. Cindy Shaw will officiate. Burial will follow in the Round Springs Cemetery with military rites.John served in the Vietnam War, where he received the Purple Heart, and retired from the United States Air Force having attained the rank of Master Sergeant. He also retired as a Deputy Sheriff from the Massac County Sheriff's Department. He was a member of the First Church of God in Metropolis, Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star, and was a Shriner.John is survived by his wife, Marilyn Steele; daughter, Karen Oliver and husband Jeff; son, John D. Steele and wife Kathy; step son, Jeremy Legereit all of Metropolis, IL; 5 grandchildren, Matthew and Mary Steele of San Antonio, TX, Dylan and Kasi Oliver, Amanda Steele; great grandson, John Keeghan Steele all of Metropolis, IL; daughter-in-law, Maria Sophia Steele of San Antonio, TX; several nieces and nephews.John was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Juanita Steele; grandparents, John and Josephine Steele; son, Michael A. Steele; brother, Michael L. Steele.Visitation will be held on Thursday evening, June 11, 2015 from 5 to 8 pm at the First Church of God, 1105 Girard Street, Metropolis, Illinois. Masonic and Eastern Star rites will be conducted at 7 pm. Friends may also call on Friday morning June 12, 2015 from 9 am until the funeral hour at the church.Memorials may be made to St. Louis Shriners Hospital for Children, 2900 N. Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.Pallbearers will be Dylan Oliver, Matthew Steele, Jeremy Legereit, Philip Chase, Stan Chase, and Doug Harris.
