(Powell) Maggio
June 28, 1948 – August 11, 2024
Janet Sue Powell Maggio was called to the Lord's house August 11th, 2024. Janet was born to Lottie and Quentin Powell of Metropolis on June 28, 1948. She graduated Metropolis High School in 1966, and went on to attend Southern Illinois University Carbondale graduating with a teaching degree in English. While attending SIU, she met and married the love of her life, Leonard Maggio and was married for 55 years. She taught high school English in Rockford for two years and then decided to follow her husband while he served for 30 years in the United States Air Force. Retirement in 2002 brought Janet back to Massac County where she settled down and built their retirement home on family farmland. Janet was a dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother. She spent her entire life supporting family friends and community.
She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and member of Fort Massac Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) where she served as secretary and treasurer for several years.
She is preceded in death by her parents Lottie and Quentin Powell and stepmother Loraine Dummeier Powell, and her sister Rosalie Corse.
She is survived in death by her husband Leonard (Len) Maggio, her two children Lori Maggio-Hall and Joseph Maggio with their spouses Michael of Wilmington DE and Kathleen of Batavia IL. In addition she is survived by four grand children Grace Hall, Quentin Hall, Leo Maggio and Mara Maggio along with two direct nieces Kate and Diana Neely and multiple other cousins.
Funeral Mass will be at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Metropolis on Thursday, August 15, 2024 at 10:00 am with Father Michael Mujule officiating. Burial will follow at the St. Johns Church Cemetery on Waldo Church Road at 11:00 am.
Visitation will be held on Thursday morning from 9:00 am until 10:00 am at the church.
Memorial donations can be made in her name to St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 315 East 3rd Street, Metropolis, Illinois 62960.
