Mark Smith, 68, of Metropolis, IL, passed away on July 25, 2013, at his home of complications from COPD and Emphysema.There will be no services.Mark retired as a U.S. Merchant Marine Chief Engineering Officer. He received his Chief Engineering Officer License from the U.S. Coast Guard for all oceans, great lakes, and inland waterways in 1994. Mark started his career with R&W Marine of Paducah, KY, working on the inland waterways (brown water) in the Tow Boat Industry, starting as a deckhand. He then went to work for Hivide Marine of Miami, FL, in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans (blue water) on container ships with home ports in Pearl Harbor, HI, and Norfolk, VA. Hivide Marine is a subcontractor for Military Sealift Command, delivering vital supplies to the Navy and Air Force bases worldwide. In 2006, after 30 years, he finished his Merchant Marine Career as a Chief Engineer working for Catfish Bend Casino in Ft. Madison, IA, and various other casino boats throughout the Midwest.Mark was an avid Harley Rider, riding locally and all over the USA with friends for many years on his Ultra-Classic.Mark is survived by his wife, Jane Smith; son, Todd Smith and wife Laura of Metropolis; daughter, Michelle Clutts and husband Rusty of Paducah; one grandson, Jake Clutts of Paducah; one step-daughter, Tracie Berry and husband Richard of Metropolis; step-son, Joe Herrin of Hot Springs, AR; 3 step-grandchildren, Kacie Berry of the US Air Force, Nik Berry and Rachel Chapman both of Metropolis.He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil (Smitty) and Dixie Smith .Memorials may take the form of donations to the Trinity Presbyterian Church 605 Metropolis Street Metropolis, IL 62960 or First Church of God 1105 Girard Street Metropolis, IL 62960.
