Gladys Travis, age 82, of Massac County, IL passed away on May 30, 2013 at the Metropolis Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.Gladys was born on April 7, 1931 to Henry and Amanda (Windhorst) Foss Sr. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion E & R (United Church of Christ) at the age of 14. She played the organ and piano at her church for 68 years. Her health forced her to stop playing in church last year, but she continued to play the piano at the nursing home until Good Friday Services this year. She played for many weddings, funerals, and volunteered countless hours playing for services at the nursing homes, Happy Hearts Senior Center, and the Eastern Star Masonic Lodge.She was united in marriage to Howard Travis on April 19, 1956, and was a devoted wife until his passing in 1994. She and Howard were never blessed with children of their own, however they loved entertaining their nieces and nephews and other children in their neighborhood with snacks, fun, games, and the bicycle built for two. She retired from IKT Auto Parts Store after working there for over 40 years.Besides her parents and her husband Howard, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Carl Foss and wife Irene and Henry Foss Jr.; sisters, Mildred Mescher and husband Dynamite and Geneva Sommer and husband Bob; brother-in-law, Kenneth Travis.She is survived by many nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law, Lois Foss and Betty Travis; brothers-in-law, Don Travis and wife Norma and Bob Travis and wife Shirley; many cousins and countless friends.A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Monday, June 3, 2013 at the Zion United Church of Christ. Dr. James Nelson and Rev. David Deem will officiate. Music will be provided by Connie Hefner. Burial will follow in the Metropolis Memorial Gardens.Visitation will be held on Monday, June 3, 2013 from 11 am until 2 pm at the Zion United Church of Christ.Memorials may be made to Zion United Church of Christ, 1132 Country Club Road, Metropolis, Illinois 62960.Pallbearers will be her grand nephews, Andrew Gower, Erik Vannoy, Brent Manley, Jeremy Mescher, Landon Sommer, Darby Mescher.Honorary Pallbearer will be her nephew, Patrick Mescher.Miller Funeral Home in Metropolis is in charge of arrangements.
