Obituary

Everett Buchanan, 85, of Metropolis, IL, passed away Tuesday, August 2, 2016 in Georgetown, Indiana. Everett was born in Pope County, Illinois on December 9, 1930, to Elda and Vitura (Hall) Buchanan. He was the youngest of six children: Cleo Fern (Perry) Laird, Travis, Mildred (Everett) Rodgers, Elda, Jr., and Lawrence. The family moved to Metropolis in 1936. In 1948, Everett graduated from Metropolis Community High School. On September 25, 1952 he married Wanda Lee James, also of Metropolis. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in San Antonio, TX then in Fort Walton, FL. They enjoyed this time in their lives very much and made many friends. In 1954 he was sent overseas to Taegu, South Korea for one year, where he was a personnel officer at the base headquarters of the 58th Fighter-Bomber Wing. When his year was over, he was scheduled to fly home from Korea, but was persuaded by his buddies to take a boat with them instead. They later learned that the plane had crashed into a mountainside in Hawaii, and there were no survivors. On the 17-day boat ride, he passed the time by playing Bingo and won a very nice cultured pearl necklace and earrings which he gave to Wanda upon his return. Everett worked in retail management following his years in the Air Force. He was a manager then district supervisor for P.N. Hirsch & Co. for many years. He was an avid outdoorsman, and especially loved collecting and trading guns, and hunting quail and pheasant. He also loved to fish, and passed on his knowledge of these sports to his grandsons. Everett was committed to his family, and was actively involved in his church, made many friends, and was named a Kentucky Colonel by the Governor of Kentucky in 1975. Everett is survived by his daughters, Brenda Buchanan (Siefferman) and Diane (Eric) Forler, grandchildren Jason Siefferman, Brian Siefferman, Nathan Siefferman, Sydney Forler and Kelsey Forler; great-grandchildren Kimberly Siefferman, Jolie Siefferman, and Carson Siefferman; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, and wife Wanda. Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 6, 2016 from 12 noon until the funeral hour at 2:00 p.m. at the Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home in Metropolis, IL. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 6 at the Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home in Metropolis, IL. Burial will follow in Metropolis Memorial Gardens in Metropolis, IL.
