Obituary

Ms. Emma (Henson) Parkins, age 94, of Metropolis, IL, passed away on Friday, October 3, 2014 at her home.Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Monday, October 6, 2014, at the Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home with Steve Karraker officiating. Burial will follow in the Masonic Cemetery in Metropolis.Emma was born February 3, 1920, in Pope County. She was the daughter of William Henson and Ellen (Wood) Henson. She was united in marriage to William L. Parkins on May 28, 1938, in Union City, TN. William preceded her in death on August 10, 2000. Survivors include her daughter Nola Sue (Parkins) Jewell and son-in-law Allan Jewell of Carterville, IL, sisters-in-law Veeda Henson and Alice June Parkins, both of Metropolis, as well as several nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband of 62 years, William Parkins. Emma was also preceded in death by her brothers William, Christian, Walter, Raymond, Charles, Orville, and Artie, as well as several nieces and nephews.Emma worked at the Good Luck Glove Factory. She was an excellent cook and seamstress. She enjoyed reading, gardening, needlework of all kinds, and made many beautiful quilts. She shared her talents of cooking and sewing by organizing the ladies from church in canning fresh produce for Potter's Children Home and making cancer bandages for the American Cancer Society. She love telling jokes and always had a new one to tell.Emma was a member of the Church of Christ for 78 years. She especially enjoyed working with the refreshments at Vacation Bible School. The family would like to acknowledge a very special caregiver, AnnMarie Atkinson, whom over 12 years became like a second daughter to Emma. We also thank John and Johnathan Haverkamp, Margie Parker, Jane Gregory and Luckie Atkinson for all their help in keeping Mom at home.The family request no flowers. Memorials may be made to the Metropolis Church of Christ (Hwy 45) in Metropolis, IL; New Pathways for Children, PO Box 10, Melber, KY 42069-0010; or Lourdes Hospice of Paducah, KY. Aikins Farmer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
