Elsie E. Gilbert, age 91, of Metropolis, IL, passed away at 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 01, 2017 at the Massac Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at the Cherry Street Pentecostal Church with Rev. Harry Greaves and Rev. Russell D. Gilbert officiating. Burial will follow in the Metropolis Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Gilbert was a pastor's wife for 40 years and the co-owner of Gilbert's Sewing and Appliance Center. She was also a member of the Cherry Street Pentecostal Church in Metropolis. Elsie is survived by her sons, Stan Gilbert and wife Teresa and Russell Gilbert and wife Malinda all of Metropolis; four grandchildren, Stanley Gilbert and wife Deisha of Metropolis, Jenifer Bunting and husband Billie of Suffolk, VA, Angela Brinker and husband Jason of Jacksonville, NC, and Aimee Quinn and husband Josh of LaGrange, NC; nine great grandchildren, Hannah Gilbert and Joshua Gilbert, Emilynn Bunting, Graham Brinker, Daxton Brinker, Evangaline Brinker, Daniel Quinn, Samuel Quinn, and Charlotte Quinn; two sisters, Edith Rayley and husband Junior of Chesterfield, VA and Virginia Clowers of Madisonville, TN; two brothers, James Snellings of Farmville, VA and Lee Snellings of Amelia, VA; several nieces and nephews and lifelong friend, Joyce "Poochie" Ferguson of Richmond, VA. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence Albert and Ruby May (Marshall) Snellings; 1st husband, Stanley Goodman; 2nd husband, Rev. Russell E. Gilbert; an infant granddaughter, Ashley Lynn Gilbert; three sisters, Edna Snellings, Joyce David and Doris Williams; two brothers, Charles "Bookie" Snellings, and Harry Snellings. Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 4 from 10 a.m. until the funeral at 1 p.m. at the Cherry Street Pentecostal Church. Music will be provided by the Cherry Street Pentecostal Church. Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be given to the Cherry Street Pentecostal Church 910 Leonard St Metropolis, IL 62960.
