Dempsey Sawyers, 71, of Metropolis, IL, passed away on Tuesday, December 15, 2020 at Mercy Health Lourdes.

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, December 21, 2020 in I.O.O.F. Cemetery with Shane Baker officiating. Those attending the service are reminded that customarily accepted social distancing guidelines are to be observed. The wearing of a facemask or covering are requested by the family.

Mr. Sawyers was retired from the City of Metropolis after over 20 years of service. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. Most importantly, he was a family man that adored his grandchildren who lovingly referred to him as "Papaw".

Dempsey is survived by his children, Keri Johnson and husband Matt, Michael Englehart and Monty Englehardt; grandchildren, Princeton Kimmins, Aaliyah Kimmins, Quintin Johnson and Cadence Johnson; great grandson, Kingston Kimmins; two sisters, Teresa Harris and husband Randy and Glenda Ramage and husband Jerry; two brothers, Jack Sawyers and wife Julie and Jim Sawyers; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Calvin Sawyers and Hazel (Douglas) Sawyers; infant son, David Sawyers; and brother, Danny Sawyers.
