Charles "Moose" Griffey, 73, of Joppa, IL, passed away at his home August 2nd, 2017.
Funeral services will be held at 11am on Monday, August 7, 2017 at Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home in Metropolis with Rev. David Keyes and Bro. Justin Wolfe officiating. Burial will follow in the Metropolis Memorial Gardens.
Charlie was an alumni of Joppa High School and enjoyed playing sports. He played baseball and it was there that he earned his nickname "Moose". After graduating, he spent many years officiating basketball and baseball games. He loved sports and enjoyed watching competitive teams play.
Charlie worked as a buyer for Gross and Janes Tie Company. He worked with local sawmills to buy timber and coordinate shipping to treatment plants. He was an auctioneer for many years, and loved trading and "treasure hunting". One of his favorite sayings was "One man's junk is another man's treasure." Along with trading, he had a great love of farming, raising cattle, playing cards and even worked as a blackjack dealer for Player's Riverboat Casino. The last few years he helped maintain the Metropolis Memorial Gardens. Charlie was one of a kind and the best kind of friend to have.
He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Judi, two daughters, Stacey (Lynn) Reames of Metropolis and Ashley (Shane) Smith of Fairview Heights, IL; two grandchildren, Emily and Alex Reames; two sisters, Cora Lee Peck and Sue Sandusky both of Joppa; several nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents George and Emma Griffey; two brothers, George Griffey Jr. and Robert "Corky" Griffey; one sister Mary Shelton.
Visitation will be held Sunday, August 6, 2017 from 6 to 8 pm at the Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home in Metropolis.
Charlie was a supporter of the St. Jude's foundation. At the family's request, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital PO Box 1000 Dept. 142 Memphis, TN 38101-9908 or the Metropolis Memorial Gardens Perpetual Care c/o Rosa Lee Fick 73 Massac Road Grand Chain, IL 62941.
