Obituary

Boopie (Elizabeth) Mitchell, Wow! Where to even start? Boopie was born on January 21st, 1940 in Metropolis, IL to Frank and Ann Holzer. She is the baby sister to Frank Dale and Phil Holzer – who, as children, lovingly nicknamed her "Boopie" after the cartoon character Betty Boop. The nickname stuck!

Soon after graduating high school Boopie spotted a handsome young man just out of the Air Force. She somehow just knew that he was the one for her. That young man is James "Mitch" Mitchell who soon realized "Boop" was someone special. They married on June 13th, 1959 and spent 66+ years together building a family, a life, and a legacy along with a ferocious and loving devotion to one another. They taught all of us what true love is and that "the love of my life" could be real and not just cliché.

God used Boopie and Mitch to bring their two children into this world. Their son is Patrick Mitchell (Marla) and their daughter is Karen Hare (Cecil). They have four grandchildren – Destiny Hunt (William), Dalton Mitchell, Emma Hare, and Ava Hare – and one great-grandson, Hooper Hunt, with another great-grandbaby on the way. Boopie absolutely adored these grandbabies and her great grandson, and nothing and no one could bring her more joy and delight than them.

Boopie was a hard worker, starting from an early age. She was always proud to share with others that she started working at age 14 at "The Theater" in Metropolis. As a young adult she spent several years working as a dental assistant to Dr. George. She loved him and working for him. She also worked for years for her brother-in-law, Charles Mitchell, in his pharmacy. She loved him and working for him, too. She retired from JC Penney where she worked as a sales associate. She loved working there, too! All of these "jobs" aside, Boopie's greatest life work was taking care of and serving others. She loved BIG and intentionally saw the good in people. She was unmatched in her sacrifices, love, devotion, and service to her husband, parents, children, grandchildren, and great grandchild. Her loyalty to her family and friends was unshakable.

Boopie enjoyed doing many things, but giving to others, shopping, and going to lunch with friends were her all-time favorite activities. Boopie was an incredible cook and loved good food and great service. Destin was her "Paradise on Earth" (and Harbor Docks' salad and fried red snapper were the best things she ever put in her mouth.) God gave Boopie the Gifts of Service and Hospitality. All of you who knew her well, know that if you ever left Boopie's company hungry, thirsty, or in need – that was on you. Boopie simply loved people. She seemed to never meet a stranger and to never have "enough" friends.

Boopie passed away on Monday, November 17th, 2025, surrounded by her family. We are quite certain she has already cooked a huge meal (including several homemade pies) for Jesus and is insisting that He hasn't eaten enough. We would love for you to join us in honoring and celebrating her life on Friday, November 21st, at Aikins-Farmer-Loftus-McManus Funeral Home at 70 Jon Street, Metropolis, Illinois. Visitation will begin at 3 pm with a special service starting at 5 pm. We also would love for you to come with a favorite memory of Boopie to share.

Boopie was a faithful member of the First Christian Church in Metropolis, IL – where she introduced Jesus and the Christian faith to her children. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you prayerfully consider making a donation to the Building Fund at her church, First Christian Church, 420 Catherine Street, Metropolis, Illinois 62960.

If you would like to carry on Boopie's legacy and life work, do these simple things: Do or say something to someone else to help them feel good about themselves. Compliment a server. Be kind to a stranger. Pay attention and recognize someone in need – and help them. Give selflessly. Perform random acts of kindness daily. You know, love like Jesus.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Aikins-Farmer-Loftus-McManus Funeral Home. Online condolences may be made at www.aikinsfarmer-millerfh.com
