Obituary

Betty L McQueen, 91, of Metropolis passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 3, 2016 at the Metropolis Rehabilitation and Health Care Center. The daughter of Stephen Allen and Mary (Caldwell) Holliday, Mrs. McQueen was born on November 17, 1924. Funeral services will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, August 6, 2016 at Miller Funeral Home with Rev. David Deem officiating. Burial will follow in Metropolis Memorial Gardens. Betty was a devoted member of the First Christian Church in Metropolis for 60 years. For a few years in the 50's, Mrs. McQueen was a reporter and proof reader for the Metropolis News. She was a bookkeeper at First National Bank for 8 years and retired in 1985 after 17 years as a teacher's aide with Massac Unit One serving in the Brookport Elementary and Central Elementary schools. She enjoyed playing bridge and the annual January trips she took with her husband to Punta Gorda, FL meeting up with a Metropolis group of friends also vacationing there. Betty was active in the DAR, Metropolis Woman's Club, the For-Get-Me-Nots Red Hat Society, Metropolis Garden Club and the Loyal Hearts Sunday School class. She is survived by her children, Donna M. Smith and husband Jerry of Glastonbury, CT, Al McQueen and wife Pam of Gowen, MI, and Mark McQueen and wife Cheryl of Metropolis; five grandchildren, Amanda Garrity and husband Adam of Glastonbury, CT, Jim McQueen of Lansing, MI, Laura Schultz and husband Nick of Grand Rapids, MI, Melissa Quint and husband Drew of Brookport, and Valerie Birdsong and husband Michael of Metropolis; nine great grandchildren, Noah and Kristian Garrity, Arya Schultz, Jacob and Jenna Gentry, Aaron Quint, Keely Jo Holt, and Max and Ainsly Birdsong. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donald C. McQueen; brother, Stephen Holliday; one granddaughter, Krista L. Smith, and one great grandson, Callan Garrity. Visitation will be held at Miller Funeral Home on Saturday, August 6, from 10:00 a.m. until the funeral hour at 12 noon. The family wishes to thank everyone at the Metropolis Rehabilitation and Health Care Center for their loving care and the caring visitors from her church and the community who made the last 8 years, 8 months of her life a safe, warm journey.
