Rev. Alton E. Carter, age 73, of Metropolis, IL, passed away on Monday, June 1, 2015 at his home.Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. on Saturday, June 6, 2015, at the First Missionary Baptist Church with Dr. Orlando McReynolds officiating. Burial will follow in the Metropolis Memorial Gardens.Alton was born on October 29, 1941 at home in Baton Rouge, LA. He attended Scotlandville High School where he received an athletic scholarship to Texas Southern University. He later attended Southern University in Baton Rouge. Rev. Carter was the pastor of Faith Tabernacle Church for over 25 years. He and his wife sponsored an annual community outreach holiday dinner for 20 years. He established a food pantry in 1988 at Faith Tabernacle which is still in existence today and largely services families in the Massac County area. He was also instrumental in facilitating a large teen ministry, computer lab and several youth events. He received a Community Service award in 2001. In addition to his ministry, Alton also worked full time at Honeywell for 25 years. He was also appointed as a Commissioner of the Metropolis Police and Fire departments.Alton is survived by his wife of 44 years, Brenda Carter of Metropolis; 3 daughters, Nicole Carter of Indianapolis, IN, Kimberly Carter of Brownsburg, IN, and Erika Smith and husband Shawn of Columbus, IN; 1 granddaughter, Emersyn Smith; 2 sisters, Geraldine Fox of Chicago, IL, Hattie Mae Carter of Baton Rouge, LA; 2 brothers, Eddie Lee Carter (Theresa) and Malcolm Carter both of Baton Rouge, LA; and a host of nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Selena (Green) Carter; 1 sister, Erma Lee (Carter) Myles; and 2 brothers, Henry Carter, Jr. (Billie) and Lionel Carter.Visitation will be at First Missionary Baptist Church on June 6, 2015 from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. Expressions of sympathy may be given to the Faith Tabernacle Food Pantry, 721 Broadway, Metropolis, IL 62960.Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.Online Condolences may be left at www.aikinsfarmer-millerfh.com.
