Mrs. Jewell Bates, age 92, of Metropolis, IL, died at 3:56 am on Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at the Metropolis Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Metropolis.
Funeral services will be held at 11am on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at the Miller-Loftus-McManus Funeral Home in Metropolis with Bobby Parker officiating. Burial will follow in Metropolis Memorial Gardens.
Jewell was born on March 20, 1925 to William Claude and Alice Tapley Fowler. In March 1942, she married Curtis Bates and together they shared 64 years of marriage until his death in 2006. In their early years of marriage, they worked on a peach orchard near Joppa. Then, Curt got a job at Burgess and Norton in Geneva, IL and Jewell worked at the hospital there. After Curt's retirement, they moved back to Metropolis. She was member of Dixon Springs Methodist Church for over 50 years.
She is survived by three special nieces, Janice Pritchett, Glenna Kirk and Connie Parker. She is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins, and many friends at Happy Hearts.
She is preceded in death by her parents; 9 brothers and sisters, Claude Fowler, Willard Fowler, Maude Fowler, Mildred Fowler, Georgia Forby, Helen Bates, Mary Meinders, Gladys Kirk, and Anna Marie Riley.
Visitation will be held from 9am until the funeral at 11am on Saturday, February 3rd, at Miller-Loftus-McManus Funeral Home.
