Irene (McAtee) Artman of Metropolis died Wednesday after 102 years of love, laughter, and adventure. She was a loving daughter, a pioneering nurse, a gold star mother, a sister who made her brothers laugh, a wife who found true love, a world traveler, a great friend, a grandmother extraordinaire, a card player, a golfer, an avid birdwatcher, a curious soul, a quilter, a margarita drinker, a rug cutter, a great wit, a kind soul, and a lover of life. She was and is beloved.
She previously lost her parents, Ruth and Boyd McAtee; her brothers, Hugh and Curt McAtee; her husband, Jay Paul Artman; and her son, Jim Artman.
She leaves behind a large and loving family, including: Rebecca Jellen, Andrew Artman, Jennifer Jellen and Ryan Hennessy; Lisl, John, and Natalie Gapinski; Trina and David Hass; Eleanor McAtee; Bob and Karen Swenson; and many nieces and nephews.
At Irene's request, there will be no services. We ask instead that you remember her by hugging a loved one, doing a kind deed, or sharing a belly laugh with a friend.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to C.O.P.E. in her name, at 1013 North Avenue, Metropolis, Illinois 62960.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Miller Funeral Home. Online condolences may be left at www.aikinsfarmer-millerfh.com
