Wayne Glass Obituary

Coval Wayne Glass

Wayne Glass, 89, of Metropolis, Illinois went to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 4, 2017 at Massac Memorial Hospital.

Wayne was born in Rosebud, Pope County, Illinois on September 11, 1928 to Truman Dale Glass and Ellen May Glass. He graduated from Metropolis Community High School in 1947, and married his sweetheart, Margaret Sue Bonifield at First Baptist Church in Metropolis on February 8, 1953. They lived in the same house together for over 6 decades, and often boasted that they never had a fight in their lives.

Wayne worked in the trucking industry for most of his life, and the majority of that time was spent working for his father in law at Bonifield Brothers Truck lines. He served in the 3rd Infantry Division as a rifleman during the Korean War, where he was awarded a Bronze Star for bravery in combat. He was an exceptional sports player, and knew the games of football, baseball, basketball and golf well. He used that knowledge throughout his life to give back to young athletes, was one of the biggest Metropolis and Massac sports fans, and became a second grandpa to many players over the years. He was an adamant hunter, and used the time in the field to grow close to family and friends. Wayne also served as Sunday School teacher and Deacon at First Baptist Church in Metropolis, where he was very faithful.

Wayne Glass was a great husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was a man of great character and integrity, worked hard, showed the love of Christ to everyone that he came in contact with, and was immensely proud of his family.

Wayne is survived by wife Margaret Sue Glass, son Kelly and Cathe Glass, son David and Laurie Glass; grandchildren Toby (and Leigh) Glass, Jacob (and Careece) Glass, Elijah Glass, Mckense Glass (and Chandler) Shepherd, and Quincy Glass; and great-grandchildren Riley, Piper, Samuel, Ceeley, and Ella. Wayne was preceded in death by brothers Dale Glass and Larry Glass.

Funeral services will be held at 2 pm on Monday, November 6, 2017 at the First Baptist Church in Metropolis. Bro. Marc Glass will officiate. Burial will follow in the Masonic Cemetery.
