Walter J Iber

Walter J. Iber, age 89, of Metropolis, IL, formerly of Pekin, IL, died Monday, October 16, 2017 at Massac Memorial Hospital.

Graveside services with military rites will be held at 10am on Friday, October 20, 2017 at the Metropolis Memorial Gardens. Rev. David Deem will officiate.

Walter was born the son of Walter Iber and Leona Carlson Iber. He graduated from Pekin High School and Bradley University. He served in Army Occupation Forces in Korea at the end of WWII. He was Plant manager of Laidlaw Corporation at the Bartonville and Metropolis, IL locations for 34 years. After retirement, he served on the Board of Directors of Laidlaw Corp for 10 years.

Walt was a loyal Chicago Cubs baseball and Bradley Braves Basketball fan. He was a member of the American Legion, past member of the Pekin, IL and Metropolis Elks Clubs and was an avid golfer. He was a licensed pilot who loved to fly and build model airplanes.

Walter is survived by his wife of 64 years, Kay Iber; his four daughters, Laurie Runyon and husband Joel of Naperville, IL, Rita Gower and husband Jim, Nancy Ball, and JoAnn King and husband Mike all of Metropolis, IL. Also surviving, seven grandchildren, Nathan Gower, Sam Runyon, Dylan Gower, Simone Runyon, Carly Ball Taylor King, and Alex King; three great grandchildren, Jenna Gower, Ashley Gower, and Jericho Gower.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Leona Iber and granddaughter, Ashley Brannon.

Visitation will be held on Thursday evening, October 19, 2017 from 6 to 8 pm at the Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home in Metropolis.

In lieu of flowers the family requests charitable donations be given in Walter's name to Cubs Charities c/o Community Affairs, Wrigley Field, 1060 W. Addison St., Chicago, IL 60613 or to Ronald McDonald House Charities Inc. 26345 Network Place, Chicago, IL 60673-1263.
